Play Card Orienteering Meet

Overview

On March 16th, NJROTC cadets on the orienteering team traveled to the Playcard Education Center in Loris to participate in a competition hosted by Loris High School. Cadets were selected to participate in 6 different challenges:

Land Navigation:

Four cadets were provided a score sheet with eight-digit grids to three points, a topographical map, a protractor, a mechanical pencil, and were given 2 and a half hours to score the surrounding area to find their 3 points. Our cadets placed 3rd overall and received bronze medals for their achievement.

Trail Run:

Four cadets ran a timed trail and cross-country run of approximately 1.5 miles. The cadets ran through difficult terrain which included sand and swamp.

Challenge Course:

Five cadets ran a course consisting of several challenges ranging from crawling through mud, swinging on ropes, flipping tires, and carrying weighted litter, all while being timed.

Primitive Weapons:

Two cadets were chosen to employ throwing spears and bows and were scored on their accuracy. Our cadets placed second and received silver medals for their achievement

Fire Starting:

Two cadets were tasked with starting a fire using a flit set, two cotton balls (one regular one full of petroleum jelly), and anything in the surrounding area of their choice. Their goal was to burn through a string nine inches off the ground.

Tug-o-War:

After all other competitions were finished, all schools entered a team of 10 cadets and alongside their instructors, assembled to close out the event with a single elimination tug-o-war competition.

Overall, our cadets placed fourth in the competition, missing third place by one point. They did exceptionally well and kept a positive attitude throughout the entire day.
